BIOPSY 1:1

STUDY OF ‘THE SEAWEED HOUSE’

The seaweed biopsy is a perfect cake cutting of The Seaweed House (2013) by Vandkunsten Architects, built on Læsø in Denmark.

The biopsy is a study of materials and construction, a research experiment exploring the components of sustainable material use in modern architecture. Eelgrass, a strain of seaweed, is used as both cladding and insulation in the wall elements and under the flooring.

PROCESS

The biopsy was produced by studying technical drawings, photos of the house and consulting the original architects from Vandkunsten.

The 1:1 model was built in the workshop at The Royal Danish Academy and made to fit on a standard European pallet.

The seaweed “sausages” were constructed by hand knitting the nets in a custom made knitting device and filling them evenly with the eelgrass.
